Enterprise Design
Ask: The main objectives of this project were to improve the user experience, update the site to the latest style guide version and to address several issues and features identified by user feedback.
Role: UX Designer, Design Lead
Responsibilities: Mid & low-fi designs, ux writing, product copy, InVision prototypes, requirement gathering and project management
Approach:
At the beginning of this project, we held a virtual workshop where we discussed a number of important topics that were related to our user experience goals, the desirability of specific features and other user feedback.
Thinking outside of the Table
My first step in exploring opportunities to improve the discoverability of applications and components was to review customer feedback to uncover insights that address key user needs. Visibility into the status of applications and components (online, offline) and problem determination without multiple interactions was also very important to users.
I first focused on exploring not only how those issues might be resolved while also identifying other ways to simplify other processes (adding, automating and managing applications, initiating command actions and viewing logs). When I started redesigning how applications are accessed, I examined the requirements for adding applications, and identified requirements that could make automated applications registration possible.
Using an accordion interaction pattern for the application picker solved the problem of showing too much information at one time, but it did not improve the visibility of offline applications — which we decided would be best if highlighted by automatically sorting and displaying application inventories when components are offline. From that idea, I worked to discover other solutions that would address information management related to registering new application, application visibility, and other key design requirements. The ultimately lead to the exploring a new interaction models in subsequent versions.
The targeted outcome for this project is an application management experience that highlights offline applications and components, streamlines application management, and reduces the distraction of information overload.
Below are the final designs for this project. These designs incorporated all important requirements and are slated for implementation by Q4 2020.
